How to Maintain Vacuum Cleaner

September 25, 2018 By Marianne Blas 2 Comments

We can all agree that vacuum cleaners are a key part of the maintenance of any home. However, what about the maintenance of the machine itself? In order to benefit from an appliance that lasts for years and years, you need to take care of it appropriately. With this thought in mind, we have created the ultimate vacuum cleaner maintenance checklist for you. See how to maintain vacuum cleaner units below!

Tips on How to Maintain Vacuum Cleaner

We have prepared a series of 7 tips on how to maintain vacuum cleaner models, which you can browse below. You don’t have to go through them in any particular order. Nevertheless, we do recommend that you complete all the steps when performing your maintenance routine.

Empty the Canister/ Replace the Bag Often

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times – don’t be lazy with emptying canisters or replacing bags. A full dirt cup or bag will not only cause vacuum cleaner suction loss, but it may also damage the overall unit in time. It’s enough for the bag or canister to be even half-full to affect the way your machine works. Prior to each cleaning session, take a minute to empty the dust cup or exchange used bag with a new one.

Clear the Cleaning Head

Your vacuum’s brush roll has come into contact with some of the dirtiest things you could imagine. As a result, you should never overlook clearing the cleaning head. The best tip on how to clean vacuum cleaner brush rolls is to cut away tangled hair. Get a seam ripper or a small pair of scissors and carefully snip through any strands wrapped around the brush roll.

Clean the Filter

Just like the cleaning head, a vacuum’s filter goes through a lot. While we recommend replacing them periodically, you can wash the filters in between. The most effective method for how to clean vacuum cleaner filter accessories is to soak them for a few minutes in soapy water. After, rinse it thoroughly and let it dry completely (about 1-2 days) before mounting it in place again.

Check the Hose

If your vacuum suddenly stops sucking, you will need to unclog the hose. Still, it’s not the only time that you should inspect this part of the machine. In fact, we recommend checking the hose about once a month to make sure that no small objects got stuck inside. You should also take care when storing your vacuum cleaner so that the hose isn’t bending.

Clean the Vent Covers

Similar to the filters, your vacuum’s vent covers can literally get caked in dust and dirt particles. Not only does it slow down the vacuum’s performance, but it can also result in overheating. The good part is that you probably won’t ever have to replace the vent covers (if you don’t break them). Nonetheless, you should dust them regularly to prevent clogging.

Wipe Dirt Build-up

On this note, we whole-heartedly recommend cleaning the entire vacuum cleaner from time to time. In other words, set about half an hour aside every few months for a wipe-down. Disassemble all the parts and accessories you can. Then, clean them with a damp cloth. Wait for all the parts to dry before assembling them in place. Your vacuum will look and smell better.

Inspect/ Replace the Belt

It’s natural for a vacuum’s belt to wear out in time. When it does, the overall performance of your vacuum will weaken or even stop altogether. Therefore, you should periodically check on the belt to analyze its state. If it appears to be stretched to its limits, you’re better off replacing it. You’ll notice a massive difference in your vacuum cleaning experience after that.

Conclusion

All in all, we’re confident that you now know how to maintain vacuum cleaner units without the added stress. Generally, there isn’t a particular schedule for vacuum cleaner maintenance. However, we do encourage you to perform the routine once every 2-3 months to get the most out of your vacuum. Are there any other tips that you would include in a how to maintain vacuum cleaner guide? Let us know what you’ve learned from your own experiences in the comments.

I am glad to read your article. I have a question to ask, how often should I clean airways, belts, and brush roll to maintain my vacuum cleaner?

Hey, Zara! We’re glad you liked it too. As a rule of thumb, a vacuum cleaner’s belts, airways, and bearing housing should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months. But we recommend checking your model’s manual for the maintenance guidelines. As for the brush roll, a visual test should do. Plus, if you’ve noticed a reduction in the vacuum cleaner’s effectiveness, it may be a sign the unit needs cleaning.
